{ he doesn't get much of a chance to open it until later, likely while dinner is being prepared. it gives him the privacy to read her words, the privacy and space to allow the warm smile that fills his face with every word written on the page. of course, he would have been okay with reading this with ayaka present as well, but their friends have been over today to celebrate as well and he'd rather openly this privately.
so much kindness is etched into the page, this letter pretty much encompassing why he fights as hard as he does, why he'll take the tiredness, the sorrow, the darkness, all of it so ayaka can keep being her lovely, wonderful self.
until the others leave he'll tuck it out of the way in his room, and when they have a moment's peace to themselves he'll thank her wholeheartedly for a gift he'll treasure.
in fact, later down the line, she'll find that same letter in a frame on top of a chest of drawers in his room, even long after his birthday has passed. }
